Enjoy what you are good at (#173).
My parents want me to do what I did not want to do, but the lesson I teach them makes them regret making that decision.
My name is Shaka and this is my story, it was a very stressful one at junior age until I stood for my rights one day.
My parents admire lawyers so much that they want me to become a law student when I reach that level.
But becoming a law student has never been my dream since I was a child, I always wanted to be a science student.
I always wanted to become an engineer, and that is my desire, I have a passion for it rather than becoming a lawyer.
When I reached senior secondary level, which will determine my main course of study in the future.
I tried to convince my parents that I could study engineering, but they refused to understand.
First academic year failed to be promoted to the next class, they were very angry at me and blamed me for the choice they chose for me.
In another academic year, I failed again for the second time, on that day I received the worst beat of my life from my parents.
I told my self this is the biggest advantage my parents have done to me because I don't agree with them.
For the first time since I was promoted to senior secondary level, my parents tried to check my books and see the notes I copied in school.
Unfortunately, I don't have a single note as an art student, I don't take art classes I went to science class instead.
My parents were very disappointed in me but I boldly took up the courage and told them, Mom, and Dad I should be the ones who feel disappointed in you both.
They wanted to increase their anger at me but they realized that if they continued they would kill me because I was almost hopeless.
Some days before the start of the new academic year, they came into my room and seated me down as my parents.
They told me all they were doing for me was for my good but I still say the same thing to them, I don't want to be a lawyer.
Guess what! They finally agreed with me and promised to give me their 100% support concerning my studies.
I came first in that academic year, and I continued to do very well in my studies then I got a requirement to be in university.
Even so, they did not want me to be an engineer but they were very happy I was doing very well.
Today I am an engineer, graduated with very good results, today they never regret supporting me in achieving my dream.
Parents sometimes behave like this, but parents should learn to accept their kid's decisions too.
Because they are not the ones going through the academic struggle, you can only succeed when you have a passion for what you believe.
Thank you for reading this story.
Have a blessed weekend.
